Mapping the World

| May 11, 2011

My conversations with Robbie over the years have invariably left me with new images and issues to ponder. I remember a presentation he gave at a faculty-student conference on globalization. He realized that while flying in a plane, that national boundaries could not be detected from the air. Rather, one saw mountains, trees, and rivers that continued across wide areas. His articulate phrasing and descriptive power left me, and I’m sure others, wondering what national boundaries really mean. His way of visualizing this point raised fresh questions, and it is an image I return to again and again. I know he will continue mapping the world in many new and original ways in the future. Congratulations to Robbie on his retirement!
